My decades-long obsession with hand sign painting, a dying art form, was triggered by the gorgeous commercial perfection of the Preservation Hall bass drum front skin. Ben Jaffe was kind enough to allow me to photograph this (sort of) still life in a simple and straightforward style with a medium format camera on a tripod and black and white film. -R.O.
